Google recently imposed a 5 million file limit for Google Drive users, even including those who pay more for extra storage. This is claimed as a preventive measure against misuse of the system which could compromise stability and security. However, Google assures users that this limitation will only affect a small number of users and does not affect most of the rest.
Users have started receiving notifications from Google Drive instructing them to delete millions of files to meet the new requirements. Some people who use the service are unable to even upload files to Drive without an explanation with a message appearing: "Error 403: This account has exceeded the 5 million item creation limit". Next, the user is directed to move the file to the trash and permanently delete it to make room for new uploads.
Despite these issues, Google's documentation for Drive is still lacking in mention of the newly imposed limits, making it difficult for users to stay up to date on these unannounced changes. This development highlights the need for effective communication between companies and users.
