February this year seems like a good month for Sony because it managed to boost the total sales of the PlayStation 5 from February 2022. This figure succeeded in shifting the position of the Nintendo Switch as the best-selling game console machine in Japan, where Nintendo consoles almost always dominate.
Japanese video game magazine Famitsu says that 366,982 PS5s were sold in February 2023. This figure is up 457% from its previous relatively low sales (65,772 units) in February the previous year. This increase could be due to the condition of global chip scarcity, which limits Sony from making massive consoles.
You can see from the phenomenon how difficult it was to find a PS5 in previous years. Sony even extended the PlayStation 4's production time to patch up the PS5's supply shortage. It took until this year for Sony to state its flaws, and clearly, that's no joke.
This success shows that the Nintendo Switch has finally found its match. Sony's latest console has never beaten the Switch in Japan, not even close. Last year, the PS5 was far behind the Switch with total sales of 942,798 and 5.3 million units respectively.
Even so, game sales statistics, Nintendo Switch is still number one in Japan. Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe topped sales at 189,031 units in Japan in February, while Hogwarts Legacy (available on PS5 and Xbox only) was the best-selling non-Nintendo title at 126,086 units sold.
