In March 2023, an attempt to smuggle electronic goods across national borders was thwarted by the Chinese Customs authorities. According to information released by the General Administration of Customs, a man was detained at the Gongbei Port Passenger Inspection Center while trying to cross the border with 239 units of Intel 13th Generation CPUs worth more than $46,000. The products were wrapped around the man's waist, stomach, and thighs, hidden by loose black clothes.
This case is not unusual given that China's import and export channels have been restricted by America and as a result many scientific and government bodies in China are forced to use consumer-based PC components for research and development purposes, including AI, medical, and military applications. They buy consumer-priced goods from e-commerce sites (such as JD.com and AliExpress). The Intel Core i5-13400F CPU is the mid-range in the Raptor Lake family and a popular option in the PC builder market.
